The cycle-friendly employer (CFE) certification scheme was developed to establish a European standard for cycle friendly companies. The certification – awarded in 16 European countries including Luxembourg – is intended to help European companies to improve the situation for employees that cycle to work.

CFE-certification recognises the efforts of your company to get employees to cycle to work. The acquisition of a CFE-certificate makes your cycling investments visible to the outside world. Thanks to a CFE-certificate your company proves itself to be a sustainable employer who cares for healthy employees and mobility.

Companies with a basic cycling policy who have made demonstrable investments for the purpose of cycling to work qualify for a ‘Bronze CFE-certificate’. The first results of the policy and the investments must be concretely visible. The company will have created a solid foundation to promote cycling and it has stated ambitions to carry forward its cycling policy in the future.

Companies that have an elaborated cycling policy and a clearly prevalent cycling culture may be eligible for a ‘Silver CFE-certificate’. Cycling is part of the DNA of the company, as demonstrated by a quality cycling infrastructure, an meaningful programme to stimulate cycling, investments in company bikes, and an increasing or high percentage of cycling employees.

Companies with a quality, creative, innovative and complete cycling policy may be eligible for a ‘Golden CFE-certificate’. The company will demonstrate cycling as their prime transport choice by means of an excellent cycling infrastructure, a complete incentive package, frequent use of bikes on all levels and departments, and a management that actively supports cycling. This company serves as an example to other employers.

In Luxembourg the CFE-certification is managed by ProVelo a.s.b.l., in collaboration with the Haus vum Vëlo a.s.b.l.

In Luxembourg, all businesses – from small businesses to large corporations – and associations can become CFE-certified. The general conditions of the businesses (e.g., number of employees, own premises, etc.) are specified in the self-evaluation tool and taken into account in the assessment.

To give companies an impression what they can do improve the conditions for cyclist the CFE-certification scheme defined six action fields. Every action field includes different measures that can be implemented and a certain number of points are assigned to each measure. Detailed information can be found in the measurement catalogue. To get a positive certification a company has to reach a minimum of points in every action field.
